Stockholm Style Report, Fall 2023

Quiet luxury, low-key luxe, stealth wealth, whatever you want to call it…this is truly the style that reigns supreme here in Stockholm!  (Granted, I did spend most of my time in the more upscale neighborhoods.) Did they start this trend that has been hitting full force in countries around the world? I was quite surprised, as my last Scandi experience was in Copenhagen, and people were in much more colorful attire then.

Here, it’s all about black, white, cream, navy, grey, and beige. You may find the occasional plaid or houndstooth thrown in, though still in this neutral color palette. Monochromatic (head-to-toe in the same color) looks are all the rage, whether it’s an all-black, or an all-neutral ensemble. This seems to be true for both men and women.

I spoke with this darling mother and daughter trio about it today. They said it has not always been like this. The mother said the current styles really are in harmony with the Swedish vibe of minimalism. They fully embrace this sort of easy dressing.

Upon closer inspection, I did notice that no matter the price points of the garments someone is wearing, whether H&M or Loro Piana, they generally have a high-end designer bag, and often a belt. Blouses are often worn tucked in to showcase this detail of their outfit.

Now that the weather is transitioning here from summer to fall, I am definitely seeing quite a few blazers and leather jackets. Oversized black leather blazers and biker jackets are hot!

Prints are far and few between. The few I did run across were also in neutral colorways. One of the most popular prints is a stripe – typically in a t-shirt or sweater, with a white or cream background and a navy or black horizontal stripe.

The absolute main footwear choices seem to be sneakers or ballet flats, with the occasional loafer. I’m guessing boots will soon make an appearance, once it gets colder.

And what about jewelry, you ask? I’m so glad you did, as you know I’m a complete jewelry-a-holic, always sporting big, chunky gold. Well…this certainly pegs me as a tourist, as NO one adorns themselves this way here.

First of all, silver and white gold are the preferred choices. They opt for smaller, more delicate jewelry. To add a bit of sparkle, I saw some diamond eternity bands, a solitaire on a thin chain, that sort of thing. I spoke with a few residents about this. They said that spending a lot of money on jewelry is just not a priority, especially for mothers. They’d rather spend their krona on their children or their household. Plus, they just don’t want to be showy or stand out.

Denim, ubiquitous worldwide, is worn with a straight or wider leg.  Skinny jeans? Not so much, except on a few men. I did see quite a few women dressed in a denim shirt and jeans – the proverbial Canadian tuxedo. Personally, I like the look when two hues of denim are mixed.

Is this how you dress?  Does it suit your personal style?  I’d love to know!
